Local SEO: how to show up on Google when someone searches for your service in your city

People searching for “electrician near me” are ready to hire. Here is what makes your business the one they pick.

Local search is the most valuable search there is

When someone types “dentist in Brisbane” or “restaurant near me”, the decision is almost made. They are not browsing out of curiosity, they want to sort it out now.

That is why showing up in these searches is worth more than any viral post. Local SEO, Google ranking for your area, is the work of putting your business right there.

The three places local search happens

The first is the map, with the three Google Business Profiles shown at the top. The second is the organic results just below. The third is the ads, which you pay for per click.

The first two are free once you win them, and that is where local SEO does its work.

One page for every service and every city

Google shows pages, not businesses. If your website has a single page about everything, it competes for very few searches. If it has one page for “laminate flooring installation in Brisbane” and another for “vinyl flooring in Ipswich”, each one becomes a way in.

That is how Award Carpets, in Australia, turned its website into its main source of quote requests.

Your Google Business Profile carries a lot of weight

The right categories, listed services, real photos, up-to-date hours and replied reviews push your profile up the map. An abandoned profile loses ground to the competitor who looks after theirs every month.

Where to start

List your services and the cities you serve. For each important combination, ask whether there is a page on your website that answers exactly that search. Where there isn't one, that is your opportunity.
